MIXED MEDIA COLLAGE SERIES
2020-2023
This series combines the spontaneity of abstract watercolors with the more thoughtful and deliberate composition required of collage.
One of the influences for this series is modern quilts. I love their two dimensional patterns, especially the non-traditional, more abstract ones, as well as the notion of using all the leftover bits that remain after something has been cut up in order to create something completely new. I find collage a really fun way to experiment with composition in particular.
The other main influence is the theme of paths, stepping stones, ladders, bridges… things that help us to move forward and find our way. These pieces were largely created during the pandemic so maybe that’s why these elements emerged then. This was a time of navigating physical spaces- being inside or outside, social distancing and social bubbles. Landmarks, guideposts or sources of orientation are often welcome in times of disruption and uncertainty, particularly as we navigate new terrain. This series embodies that exploration and awareness of space, confinement, outdoor landscapes, and personal navigation. And, as encountered on any journey, there are also resting places, intersections, spirals and inevitably, obstacles and dead ends.
