indoors, outdoors
MIXED MEDIA COLLAGE SERIES
2020-2023
This series combines the spontaneity of watercolors with the more thoughtful and deliberate composition required of collage.
One of the influences for this series is modern quilts. I love their two dimensional patterns, as well as the notion of using all the leftover bits that remain after something has been cut up in order to create something completely new.
The other main influence is the theme of maps, paths, stepping stones, ladders, bridges… things that help us to move forward and find our way. Maybe in times of uncertainly, we need or seek these more. There are also resting places, intersections, spirals and inevitably, obstacles and dead ends.
We all move through different kinds of spaces - physically as well as metaphorically. There are both inward and outward journeys to navigate, and landmarks, guideposts or sources of orientation are often welcome, particularly as we discover new terrain. Certainly throughout the pandemic, I was much more conscious of the time spent indoors, vigilant about protecting the boundaries of my social “bubble”, appreciative of the time spent outdoors, and because of social distancing, more aware of the physical location of my body relative to others as I moved through the world.
This series embodies that exploration and awareness of space, confinement, outdoor landscapes, and personal navigation.
